Text acronyms are shortened versions of common words and phrases used in text messaging or on social media platforms. Early cell phones did not have a full keyboard, instead requiring text messages to be written out through “multi-tap.” A number keypad contained 3 or 4 letters associated with each number, allowing users to tap once, twice, or three times, to type the desired letter. Because of this inefficient method of typing without a full keyboard, slang words for texting emerged. Out of convenience, typing LOL was much easier and faster than typing out each letter of the phrase Laughing Out Loud.

Once phones started being produced with full keyboards, text abbreviations did not disappear. In fact, more and more text abbreviations become commonly used each year. Now, they are so commonly used that some are even included in select dictionaries.

If you are a municipal employee managing incoming text messages on a daily basis, it is likely that you have received a text message or two that contains language you don’t understand. We’ve all been there.

You might be wondering, what does HMU, HBU, LMK, or SMH mean in texting? Texting acronyms are constantly evolving, and it can feel hard to keep up with the changing trends. It is vital to understand the needs of all residents who take the time to text the municipality so they can receive proper assistance.

Text Message segments are limited to 160 characters. Consider using some of these common acronyms in your own mass text messages to reduce the number of text messages used.

Save this list of common text acronyms and text slang words to your phone or computer to become a texting expert.
